This morning we are up early to catch a train in to Rome for the day. Hopefully, Rich will be able to protect us from the gypsies and the pickpockets!!! The only thing actually planned is the Scavi Tour that we missed the last time we were in Rome. Hopefully, this time we will have better luck.
We had an early breakfast at the hotel…then took the bus to the train station and took the 8:41AM train in to Rome. I found a seat but Charlie, Rich and Delia stood for the hour ride in to the Plaza San Pietro station.
We were really early for our tour so we just walked around the Plaza San Pietro and people watched. It was really crowded. Can’t imagine what it would be like during peak travel season!
Our Scavi tour was at 12 noon. I don’t know what I expected but I was really disappointed. The tour is of the necropolis under St.Peters and is where the remains and the tomb of St. Peter was excavated. Our guide is did speak very good english so I really didn’t understand much of what she was saying. I guess we did see, at a great distance, a bone of St. Peter. The main problem of this tour is that the whole site is kept at 95% HUMIDITY. That made for a very uncomfortable tour!!!!
After the tour we walked out thru St. Peter’s. We have been there several time but it is such an amazing place…I never tire of it.
We stopped for lunch…good pizza and good beer then we took the metro to the Spanish Steps. Rich stayed at the bottom…I walked part way and Delia and Charlie went to the top.
Then it was a stop for Gelato where I had my first problem of the trip!!!! I was getting up on a high stool when it went out from under me…..needless to say, I met the ground in not a very graceful manner. Luckily, I was not hurt but I bet I will be sore tomorrow.
See how concerned Charlie was….he just kept eating his gelato!!!
Took the train back to Civitavecchia….Stopped at the grocery store…bought some wine, bread, cheese and olives for dinner.
All in all, a pretty good day. Looking forward to boarding the Ruby tomorrow…
