Since we wanted to visit Delos, we decided that the only guaranteed way to go there was to take a ship’s tour .…..I do not like to do this but it was our only choice as there is only one ferry running to Delos.
According to Greek Mythology, Delos is the birthplace of Apollo and Aremetis. In the early 19th century, a dramatic excavation uncovered beautiful artifacts, mosaics, statues and buildings.First monument to view is the Agora of the Competialists. This open area has a round shrine, where offerings were placed.
We then walked down the Sacred Way. The road is lined with marble platforms that once held spectacular statues donated by kings.
At the end of the Sacred Way is the Sanctuary of Apollo, known as the heart of Delos. At one time, three great temples as well as other alters stood in dedication of the god. Still here is the base of the marble Statue of Apollo. Parts of the statue will be viewed in the museum.
On to the Lion District, named for the famous Terrace of the Lions, where nine elegant marble lions once guarded the sanctuary area. The outdoor lions are now replicas, but inside the museum we will see five weathered originals.
Last stop is the Delos Archeological Museum that houses some of the most exquisite specimens recovered for the surrounding site. Built in 1904, the museum compromises nine large rooms, including six excavation rooms, which showcase statues unearthed from the Delos ruins.
After we returned to Mykonos, we took the shuttle and walked around the town to sample some local beer and food. It really is a pretty little town and Charlie says he wouldn’t mind going native here……
