Since we started this adventure in Rome, and have already seen most of the Rome sites, we decided to join a tour to Assisi and Orvieto arranged by Judy Harwood (AKA Volvodoll) provided by RomeInLimousines.
The tour begins with a 2.5 hour drive to Assisi where we will visit the famous Basilica of Saint Francis, where Italy’s patron Saint is buried. Assisi is an oasis of art and architecture and the home of Saint Francis. The day was a little overcast and it was Sunday so the basilica was very crowded for Sunday mass. The old town is built on hills with the basilica at the top. The basilica is made of beautiful white stone. We walked inside but it was so crowded we didn’t see much.
After our visit to Assisi, we will drive thru the Umbrian countryside, dotted by quaint medieval towns, on our way to Orvieto. Here we will have lunch and tour the town which boasts one of italy’s finest and most impressive gothic cathedrals.
We stopped for lunch at a little outdoor cafe.
Delia and I stole Charlie’s wine…..
Also found Betty Boop…..
All in all, we had a nice day but there was an awful lot of driving for limited time to explore. We ended the day with a glass of wine on our balcony….beautiful view!!
