Santorini

October 12, 2011

This is another “tender” port.  haven’t made any specific plans for this island.  Will probably wait until the first rush gets off the ship.  This looks like a beautiful island just to walk around.  Will either take the cable car or ride the donkey from the port up to Fira town and then take a local bus to Oia.  Must see the famous church with the blue dome.

We got on a tender pretty early.  It was very overcast and misty.  As soon as we got off the tender and got in a LONG line for the cable car, it started pouring!!!!  We turned around….got back on a tender and returned to the ship…

A little later, the weather cleared and Charlie and I decided to try again.  Delia and Rich decided to stay on board.  The line for the cable car was even longer than the first time so I convinced Charlie to ride the donkey up the hill…..

That was a real experience…almost as good as riding the camels in the Azores.  Unfortunately, Charlie cut his hand on something and needed some medical assistance….

We walked around Fira.  This is really a beautiful place.  There were 5 ships here today so it was very crowded.  We just walked around and enjoyed the scenery and stopped for some traditional Greek food that was very good.

We regained our sanity and opted to take the cable car down to shore.  All in all, another nice day.  It’s too bad the day started out rainy.  Because we didn’t have much time on shore, we could not go to Oia so I did not get to see the famous blue dome that is in all the pictures of Santorini…guess we will have to come back!!!!
